Dorset Police ran a special operation called ‘Decker’ in which they took over a double decker passenger bus from Yellow Buses in Bournemouth in order to detect vehicle drivers using mobile phones or texting at the wheel.

With lookouts posted on the lower and upper levels they were able to see numerous drivers using their phones and then radio unmarked police units following the bus. These then had to chase down the offenders and take the appropriate action.

When stopped motorists were issued with fixed penalty fines. Some drivers even ended up having their vehicle impounded at the roadside for other motoring offences. In the first hour, 10 motorists were dealt with some for mobile phone offences, some for no insurance or MOT certificates.

The bright yellow bus even had advertising on it with police warning signs telling drivers ‘Are Your Eyes On The Road’!
