This is the moment a cat's cage shook during a powerful earthquake in northern Thailand.

Footage shows the cage rocking violently as the tremors hit homes in Mae Sai district in Chiang Rai province past midnight on July 22.

The feline was jolted awake and is seen looking around in confusion as the shaking continued for more than one minute.

The Earthquake Observation Division of the Thai Meteorological Department placed the epicentre some 87 kilometres northeast of Mae Sai district.

Locals in Phayao and Chiang Mai provinces also reported feeling the earthquake and the subsequent milder aftershocks.

The United States Geological Survey said the earthquake struck 53 kilometres south of Keng Tung town in Shan State, Myanmar near its border with Thailand. It was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometres at 17:07 UTC.

There have been no reports of injuries, casualties, or property damage.
