A heavy downpour in Lushi County, Henan Province led to a rapid increase in the water level of the Buxiang River in Hengjian Township, threatening local residents with potentially catastrophic floods.

On the morning of July 3, two individuals from the Jia Village group in Daijia Village, Hengjian Township, disregarded warnings and attempted a dangerous river crossing in their vehicle. The swift currents swept their vehicle away, stranding them in the middle of the surging river in a perilous predicament.

Hengjian Township government officials rushed to the scene as soon as they heard the news. Due to the rapid water flow and the challenging conditions, they immediately contacted the county's Emergency Management Bureau and Fire Brigade to implement a rescue operation.

Upon arrival at the site, the rescuers discovered the two villagers stranded on the roof of their vehicle, approximately 120 metres from the east bank and about 60 metres from the west bank of the river. The fast currents and murky water demanded immediate intervention.

The fire and rescue team first used a drone to throw life jackets to the stranded individuals, then set up rescue ropes, putting various protective measures in place. Recognising the complexity of the situation and the considerable distance to the bank, they immediately summoned heavy-duty rescue equipment to the scene.

Once a crane arrived on-site, it was initially used to transport the rescuers to the shallow water area. They then utilized the established rescue ropes to pull the stranded individuals towards the shallows. Using the crane, the two villagers were successfully hoisted ashore, culminating in a tense rescue operation lasting nearly 90 minutes.

After a subsequent health check at the local hospital, it was confirmed that both rescued individuals were safe and in good health, despite their terrifying ordeal. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of ignoring severe weather warnings.
