The Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin & UK Floods minister Rory Stewart visited Thirlmere to assess the damage to the A591 & and meet the media & local businesses.

This clip shows Andrew Hunter from the Grasmere Gingerbread shop explain to the Transport Secretary just why the A591 is important to the local businesses.

Grasmere Gingerbread is an iconic shop situated in the village of Grasmere made famous by Wordsworth. Grasmere is on the A591 and whilst it is fully accesible the road North from Grasmere is destroyed, the normal route for tourists to go onto Keswick.

The Government announced a £40M package to help repair roads & briadges in Cumbria & Lancashire. The job of repairing the A591 has been given to Highways England.
