Blowhole erupting when perfect weather conditions align

Buy video

A combination of weather conditions have aligned to produce spectacular eruptions from the Kiama blowhole. Kiama is 50km south of Sydney NSW and a popular tourist destination. Over the years erosion has caused the opening in the blowhole to enlarge causing a reduction in the eruption size. However, with the lingering after effects of cyclone Debbie, a South Westerly swell and a strong onshore wind, conditions were perfect for producing spectacular blowhole eruptions. For a tourist, this was probably a once in a lifetime opportunity. Even locals were surprised at how large and regular the eruptions were.
Footage taken by Jacob Strickling, creator of the YouTube Channel 'Make Science Fun'. Jacob always has his eyes open looking for anything of scientific interest, and the Kiama blowhole certainly fit the bill today!
