Monsoon rains bring a new safety hazard to Indian trains – leaking engine rooms.

A video captures the plight of a train operator and shows him trying to protect himself with an umbrella as he steers the engine.
Water drips from the roof wetting the floor.

The person, who shot the video does not identify himself, but asks viewers to share it widely alleging officials had failed to fix leaking engines.

“Everyone talks about railway safety, but should train operators drive trains or try to stay dry,” he asks.

He points out that operators are also forced to keep their bags on the Driver’s Desk, which are meant to give them an easy view of the signals sent by traffic controller.

With bags blocking the view, the man says, drivers have to stand up to pick up the signals.

The popular Hindi newspaper Punjab Kesari said the video had been shot in a train from Jharkhand in East India.

The Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of area Manoj Krishna Akhori told the newspaper that he had also seen the video, which has gone viral.

He said corrective measures had been taken and the faulty engine had been sent to the workshop for repair.
