Eurasian Coot chick chasing adult
The Eurasian Coot (Fulica atra) is a common waterbird in Australia, and occurs from Eurasia to Indonesia and New Guinea. Coots have lobed rather than webbed feet and thrive in wetlands with submerged or floating waterweeds. They obtain food by diving, and also graze on plants at the water surface and ashore. They also take some animal prey including insets, small fish and worms.
Coots build a floating raft on which to nest, but sometimes have their nests amongst rushes or on logs in the water. Both parents incubate the eggs and feed their chicks. The chicks swim strongly, often chasing their parents for food.
