Bald as a baby Coot! Coots chicks being fed algae by their parents.
Eurasian Coots (Fulica atra) are common waterbirds in Australia. Their bizarre almost bald chicks are precocial, meaning that they can swim and begin to feed themselves soon after hatching. Both parents care for their chicks, diving for mainly vegetarian food and feeding it to their chicks. This video begins with a newly hatched chick with orange-red down on its head and neck sitting on an algal mat while being fed. The later part of the video has an older chick swimming after its parent, waiting to be fed while the adult Coot harvests filamentous algae to eat.
