The Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) is a kind of antelope and is the world’s tallest land mammal. Giraffes are ruminants and chew the cud like cattle. Adult Giraffes have few predators other than lions and they are most vulnerable when they are drinking. This small group of three female Giraffes cautiously approached a muddy, water-filled pan, in southern Kruger Park wanting to drink but watched and waited for several minutes before drinking. Giraffes have to spread and bend their forelegs when drinking – this makes it difficult for them to see danger and to escape if it arrives. These Giraffes had several Red-billed Oxpeckers on them – these birds remove parasites, dead skin and scabs from a range of herbivores. The Oxpeckers left the Giraffes to drink in the pan themselves in some of this sequence of clips. Giraffes flick their heads up quickly when they finish drinking – this often results in an arc of water flying off their mouths.
