Capricorn Beetle Cerambyx welensii male climbing a Holm Oak Quercus ilex, Ardeche, France

Buy video

A very active male Capricorn Beetle Cerambyx welensii (not cerdo as identification has since been corrected) is shown moving rapidly up and down the trunk of the Holm Oak Quercus ilex tree that had been providing it with larval habitat and a food-supply for several years beforehand. These beetles can fly surprisingly well when in search of their mates and they don't seem to be hampered either by their inordinately long antennae or the fact that their wings appear to be comparatively short for such large insects. The beetle was caught briefly in order to show it to the photographer's family (and also so that it could be photographed on his hand in order to illustrate scale) prior to replacing it back on the tree.
