Male barking gecko performs his highly vocal territorial call

Geckos are the only lizards with true vocal abilities and out of all geckos in the world, the Southern African barking gecko is probably one of the most vociferous. The Kalahari Desert in Southern Africa is the best place on the continent to observe these fascinating little creatures in action. During night time at our camping site in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, we were overwhelmed by the loud choruses of hundreds of barking geckos echoing into the night. They are at their loudest just after sunset and just before sunrise. These tiny geckos are mostly heard and not seen as they live in small funnel shaped burrows. It took some real determined searching in the dark to actually find one and watch it perform its loud and unique call, sometimes compared to the sound of two pebbles striking against one another. Once we located a burrow, we had to stand still for as long as it took for the gecko to reappear. Only the males perform these calls which they use to advertise their territory and hopefully attract a female. Our patience finally paid off and the little guy reappeared several times while we could film and admire this easy to hear but hard to see gecko. The video shows the male barking gecko sticking his head out of the burrow and then starts performing its unique clicking sound accompanied by small jerks of the head.
