Two zebras greet each other then start to 'babble' together

While leading a group safari through the Kruger National Park, we stopped to watch a herd of zebra, standing in an open grass field. Zebras are one of the most popular animals among foreign visitors and together with the giraffe, the most photographed animals in Africa. While watching through the herd we noticed one zebra casually walking towards another zebra. They kindly greeted each other, rubbing their noses together. To our amusement, both zebras suddenly started making funny movements with their mouths, their jaws opening and closing up and down rapidly. Both animals then lowered their heads, continuing with the erratic mouth opening and closing. Initially, for a brief few seconds, we thought they both were eating something, but a zebra chews its grass from side to side. Not once did their mouths touch any grass either. It looked more like these two zebras met up for a quick and very important discussion in private, babbling away and finally getting irritated with each other. Watching two zebras having a frantic private ‘conversation’ really did put a big smile n everyone’s face.
