Young elephants play together until bigger bully arrives

The summer of 2018 produced a wonderful wet season in Pilanesberg National Park – the grass was green and tall, and the living was easy for Pilanesberg’s Elephants. A large herd of African Elephants (Loxodonta africana) moved across the Mankwe valley, sometimes stopping to feed on the lush grass. Whenever the herd paused, the youngsters began playing – wrestling with their trunks, pushing against each other and in one case an older, larger one reared up and placed his front legs on the back of a much smaller Elephant. The smaller one didn’t like this, and attempted to shrug off the larger young Elephant. An older Elephant noticed that the play had got too rough, and moved to shelter the young Elephant with its body. No harm was done- the two younger ones , free of their larger bully began having fun, trunk-wrestling and pushing each other again.
