At least 11 people died after a boat they were in capsized during idol immersion in central India.

The accident took place at Khatlapura Ghat in Bhopal district of Madhya Pradesh state on Sept. 13.

The boat was carrying 16 people who took part in the Ganapati Visharjan or idol immersion of Lord Ganesh, the elephant-headed God.

Following the accident, a team of rescuers was pressed into the job.

Speaking to reporters, police officials said five people were rescued while 11 bodies were retrieved.

Apart from the presence of at least 40 police officials, the rescue mission consisted of teams from National Deistater Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).

Condemning the incident, Madhya Pradesh lawmaker PC Sharma announced Rs. 4 Lakh (USD 5,636) compensation for the family of the deceased.

This is not a stray incident and is, in fact, common during idol immersion.

Police forces of several states have urged revellers to maintain safety during celebrations to avoid such untoward incidents.
