Spring is here! An hour with beautiful Black Swans and their babies

Australia’s beautiful Black Swans (Cygnus atratus) are excellent parents, closely watching their cygnets and aggressively driving off threatening predators and people. This pair of Swans and their five cygnets were on the edge of Herdsman Lake, near Perth in Western Australia. The cygnets had hatched in early spring (September in Australia), and were eating the lush, green clover on the lawn at the lake’s edge, mostly sitting as they grazed with their parents stood close by, grazing themselves, or preening. Sometimes cygnets took the initiative, leading one of their parents into the rushes for water and shade. Another cygnet was with its father, sitting in his shade eating clover. Meanwhile, mother swan grazed with two of her cygnets sitting in the clover, gobbling it up. Both parents then led their cygnets back to the reeds at the lake edge to allow their young to rest and drink, while they stood guard nearby. The female swan stretched her wing and neck, and shook to rearrange her feathers as her cygnets sat in the shallow water, drinking and nibbling on waterweeds.
