This is Thailand’s first department store which remains virtually unchanged and still in business today.

Founded in 1930, Nightingale-Olympic retail store has barely changed and seemingly been stuck in time through the rapidly changing surroundings of the country’s capital, Bangkok.

The building has retained it well-preserved retro exterior. The concrete facade is shaped like a vertical maze while the interior is covered with old beige wallpaper and provides no air-conditioning or escalators.

Many rare items are still seen in display - such as archaic mannequins, vintage musical instruments, old-fashioned workout machines, and classic boardgames in their original packages.

Therefore, Nightingale-Olympic department store is also considered as a living museum where every generation can experience some of the items that were available in the past decades.

Owner Aroon Niyomvanich, 96, has worked at Nightingale Olympic for 86 years, having started her career at the age of 10.

‘’I was born into the store,’’ she told the BBC.

The store originally sold bargain cosmetics and clothing until customers asked the family to start selling more upmarket brands.

A beauty salon on the third floor once catered the society’s elite actresses, models and celebrities. Even though the salon is now closed, it still retains all of the original fixtures.

Aroon has several grand children and great children. She hopes that the store will stay in the family in the coming years, though her relatives are likely to modernise the building.
