What appears to be a mildly annoying loss of a bag of banana chips to an opportunist monkey, today takes on a more serious note. If the tourist happens to be shedding viruses without showing symptoms, a commonplace event like this could introduce the new SARS-Cov-2 virus into the monkey population. This species, the Bonnet Macaque Macaca radiata, is not endangered but a sick monkey is easy prey to a predator, and Periyar National Park has an important tiger population. The Bronx Zoo has reported that sick tigers have tested positive for Covid-19 - the only species other than humans to have done so to date. Thus, by this means Covid-19 could pose a new threat to wild tigers and possibly other endangered species.
