Corona gives name of oldest Amsterdam cafe new meaning

A corona closure sign in the window of one of Amsterdam oldest cafes, situated on the edge of the red light district, uses a saying that has to do with the name of the cafe itself: 'In 't Aepjen' ('In the monkey'). Located at the old harbor of the Dutch capital, the story goes sailors used to pay their drinking bills with monkeys that they took from their trips to the East. Since there was a guesthouse above the bar, people there would wake up with flees of the monkeys in their beds. Since then a well known Dutch saying is 'to have slept in the monkey', meaning: having had some bad luck. On the corona closure sign outside it now says: 'We all have slept in the monkey, but we hope to welcome you again soon.'
