Several migrant workers rushed to a bus station as transport was arranged for them to go back home amid the COVID-19 lockdown in southern India's Karnataka.

The incident took place at the Majestic bus station in Bengaluru city, the state capital, on May 4.

Visuals showed hundreds of migrant workers rushing with their luggage, trying to find buses that would ferry them back home.

According to the reports, the government and Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) had planned to collect bus fare from workers travelling.

However, it was later announced that the travel would be free of cost after the situation took a political turn and gained criticism from the opposition party in Karnataka.

This has been a relief for many migrant workers stranded in the city for over a month- since the lockdown began on March 23- and reached the bus station from various parts of the metropolitan city.

The travellers were screened before being allowed to board the buses.

They were also handed food packets by different organisations so that the people are not left hungry during the travel.

The free service of transport will be provided for three days to migrant workers.

Meanwhile, a few chaotic scenes were witnessed as many- irrespective of their migrant status- wanted to benefit from free transport.

The state has so far reported 651 COVID-19 positive cases and 27 deaths related to the disease.
