Long flowing cape, tail-tuft and beard of Black and White Colobus Monkey, or Mantled Guereza, one of Africa's most spectacular #monkeys in the treetops of Virunga National Park, DRC

One of the most spectacular monkeys in Africa is the Mantled Guereza, aka the Eastern or Abyssinian Black and White Colobus Monkey, Colobus guereza. They are folivores, although they eat some fruit as well as leaves, and spend most of their time high in the trees of East and Central Africa. To get around, they run along branches (not usually swinging beneath them) and launch themselves across gaps in the canopy, arms spread like a sky-diver - but with the added advantage of a big fluffy tail-tuft to act as a rudder/stabiliser - before crashing into the foliage of the next tree.
This troop lives near the park HQ of Virunga National Park, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, #DRC, and so is safe from poachers and used to friendly humans looking up at them. Once commonly hunted for their fur and for trophies, rugs and wall-hangings, the species is now protected and although still hunted illegally in some areas, it is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, except for one sub-species in Central Kenya which is endangered.
