Pensioner left shell-shocked after finding a live First World War hand grenade while unblocking his drains
A pensioner was left shell-shocked to find a First World War hand grenade while clearing a blocked drain in his back garden. Granddad-of-five George Smith, 72, pulled out the armed explosive from his clogged-up drain while working in his backyard on Monday (8/6). A bomb squad rushed to the property on Windsor Road, in Evesham, Worcs., after the WW1 device was unearthed at around 1pm. Residents were evacuated from their homes as bomb disposal teams examined the device which George had unwittingly dumped in a bucket and bashed with a crowbar.
