A wily bird - Willie Wagtail outsmarts Brulee the cat – then leaves a present

The restless Willie Wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys) is one of Australia’s most loved birds, always on the move and wagging its tail side-to-side on landing. Willies are fearless and territorial, and often harass much larger birds, and sometime scats and dogs. Willie Wagtails have a variety of calls, from harsh chittering to melodious whistles. Willie Wagtails are widespread and common and are often trusting of people. This Willie Wagtail first began gleaning stranded insects from the surface of our swimming pool, and within a day or so began taking mealworms (Tenebrio molitor), the larvae of a beetle that feeds on stored grains, from our hands. Our blond Burmese cat Brulee is not much of a hunter, but she became annoyed as Willie began taking mealworms from the hand, and jumped at him. This did not deter Willie in the least – he simply moved out of Brulee’s way and continued feeding. After Brulee had gone, Willie perched on my video camera and pooped on it. That’s gratitude!
