Excited locals raced to collect hundreds of cans of beers that a lorry spilled onto the road.

The delivery truck was driving on a steep slope when it toppled over in Sihanoukville province, Cambodia.

Residents said the truck's tire slipped on the narrow road which was wet from a recent monsoon downpour.

The driver battled to stay in control of the vehicle but rolled backwards and fell onto its side.

He was unhurt but hundreds of cans of beer spilled from the truck - sparking a panic as neighbours rushed from their homes to loot them.

Some of the locals carried sacks and boxes to take home as much as they could carry - before returning to grab even more.

Traffic police arrived at the scene and stopped people from taking the booze before draping plastic sheets over the spillage to keep them away.

The truck and the remaining beer cans were removed from the road a few hours later on the same day.

Onlooker, Chan Thy, said: ''I didn't join in because I don't drink beer. But I watched people taking the cans. It reminded me of ants when sweet juice spilled on the ground.''
