After it rained heavily in Banki in eastern India, many houses got flooded on September 2.

A resident, Ranjan Kumar Samantray, was horrified to find that a cobra had washed in along with dirty flood water.

Getting a distress call from him, two members of Snake Helpline, Lalit Mohan Panda and Durga Madhab Mohaptra, went to his house wading in knee-deep water. They carefully rescued a four feet-long cobra and released it in a dry area far from the place.

Subhendu Mallik, founder of Snake Helpline, said: " Though snakes do not compete with humans for food, during floods there is a direct competition for dry space between them.”
