A father and son in Indiana were left horrified after a parasitic horsehair worm wriggled from out of a cricket's corpse after the insect was trodden on.

Footage filmed by Joe Rish shows the parasite frantically wriggle out of the dead insect's body.

Rish told Newsflare: "My father accidentally stepped on a cricket in the garage and then we saw the worm come out."

The horsehair worm takes control of insects' brains and effectively forces them to drown themselves so the parasite can return to water.

This footage was filmed on September 8.
