Funeral undertakers protested in Cape Town demanding government institute reforms in their industry on Wednesday (September 16).

Protesters were filmed outside the offices of AVBOB and Tony Wyllie & Co in the city's Maitland suburb.

The action is part of a three-day national shutdown, which started on Monday by the Unification Task Team (UTT).

Kenny McDillon of Deo Gloria Funeral Services said: "Black funeral undertakers have to compete against large established funeral undertakers who had a forty-year head start."

Funeral undertakers in Cape Town today protested in front of the offices of AVBOB and Tony Wyllie & Co funeral undertakers in Maitland, demanding they close their doors as they protested for government to intervene in the funeral industry and change regulations in order to ease the process of securing death certificates which they say is only benefitting the big funeral operators.

Kenny Mcdillon of Deo Gloria funeral services said that small, black funeral undertakers have to compete against large established funeral undertakers who had a forty year head start, and they are demanding that government intervene and transform the industry.

Earlier the group was stopped on the N2 highway by riot police and forced to return. They then regrouped close to the airport and made their way to the offices of AVBOB in Maitland. AVBOB is one of the oldest and largest funeral undertakers in South Africa.
