Thai royalists clashed with anti-government student protesters in Bangkok, Thailand today (October 21).

Footage from the Ramkhamhaeng University shows the scuffles between the two rival groups. Monarchy supporters can be seen in yellow shirts holding pictures of the king and queen.

The movement calling for democratic reforms has surged in recent weeks with rallies being held every day since last Tuesday (October 13).

Today marks the ninth consecutive day of protests in Thailand.

The unrest has lead to regular clashes between protesters and police - with chemical-laced water being blasted at the crowds last Friday.

Dozens of protest organisers and leaders were arrested following the violent scenes. Two of the most prominent - Parit 'Penguin' Chiwarak and Panusaya 'Rung' Sithijirawattanakul - face multiple charges and have been denied bail.

Despite arrests, laws banning protests and chilling threats from the Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, Thailand protest rallies have continued across the country.

In Bangkok last Saturday and Sunday, thousands of Thai protesters occupied busy roads and intersections, making Hunger Games-style three-finger pro-democracy salutes and chanting.

Government chiefs closed all of the city's MRT subway stations and BTS monorail sky train station.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha also ordered roads to be blocked around the area and warned a curfew could be imposed if protests escalate.

The leader made chilling veiled threats warning protesters ''not to tempt the grim reaper'' before adding that ''everyone can die today or tomorrow''.

Ministers also issued a 'State Of Severe Emergency' following the unprecedented unrest. The law bans gatherings of more than five people. Thai anti-government and pro-democracy rallies and protests have grown since the start of the year.

Activists have made sweeping demands including the resignation of the prime minister, constitutional changes and reform of the monarchy.

However, officials have claimed that a mixture of disaffected opposition, foreign influence and social media 'bots' are funding and stirring up the unrest.
