Filipino man calmly drinks coffee on sofa while being battered by super typhoon
This is amusing moment a man relaxed on a safe drinking coffee as a super typhoon smashed into the Philippines yesterday morning (November 1).
Carlo Tanay, 25, had just woken up when the deadly storm Typhoon Goni made landfall with 180 mph winds and driving rain.
The man's sofa and other pieces of garden furniture were flung outside by the gusts - which also blew over dozens of trees around the home.
However, Carlo refused to panic and simply continued with his morning routine - pouring himself a hot coffee and relaxing on the sofa.
Astonishing footage shows Carlo sitting on the sofa surrounded by debris while being battered by the world's strongest typhoon in 2020 - which had the same force as a category 5 hurricane.
Carlo, from Carmines Sur province, said: ''I heard on Saturday night that the typhoon was approaching, but my girlfriend left me recently and I'm heartbroken, so I didn't pay much notice.
''Even in the morning with the wind and rain, I was still pretty down. I just carried on as normal and sat on my sofa. My brother couldn't believe what I was doing.''
Carlo and his brother Melvin were both unhurt from the typhoon, which passed the area shortly after and exited the Philippines on Sunday night.
Officials said that at least 16 people had been killed by the typhoon, which brought strong winds and heavy rain. There were severe floods after rivers burst their banks and swamped surrounding fields in Albay province.
The storm, also known as Typhoon Rolly, packed winds that increased from 100 mph to 180 mph between Thursday and Friday night as it hurtled across the Western Pacific Sea. It was the strongest typhoon of 2020.
It made landfall in the country on Sunday morning. Forecasters said it had the same force as a category 5 hurricane.
More than one million residents - around 1,000 of them with Covid-19 - were evacuated from their homes into temporary evacuation centres. There were concerns that evacuations could further spread the virus.
Weather and disaster officials said Typhoon Goni is among the strongest typhoons to hit the Philippines since Haiyan, which killed more than 6,300 people in 2013.
