Residents living in low-lying areas have been evacuated in inflatable boats as rain continues to lash the city of Chennai, India, on Wednesday (November 25).

Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are bracing for Cyclone Nivar, which has already intensified into a severe cyclonic storm.

The cyclone is expected to intensify further and is barrelling towards the southeast coast.

The powerful cyclone is likely to hit the coast by midnight.

Police, fire and rescue personnel fanned out across the city to rescue the people from the low lying areas and to clear trees that were uprooted that fell. Over 1,200 persons, including children, were evacuated from their homes and were lodged at various relief centers.
