This is the mysterious moment a pet dog had a violent fit and died after sniffing a car’s wheel.

The curious pooch named 'Nom Yan' wandered over to the black pickup truck after it parked outside a grocery store in Samut Sakhon, Thailand, on April 1.

CCTV footage shows how the three-year-old female dog poked her nose into the gaps in the alloy wheel before suddenly jerking its head back in shock.

Nom Yan collapsed to the ground and started shaking like she was having a seizure while the driver left, unaware of the dog's suffering. The other two dogs came to check on their friend, which died moments later before anybody came to help.

Devastated owner Samart Niemnak, 43, is still unsure how his beloved pooch died but he believes she may have been bitten by a snake that was coiled up inside the wheel.

He said: ‘Nom Yan was a stray dog aged around three years that started living around my grocery store. She gave birth here to her puppies and never left, so I took care of her.

‘I thought she was hit by the car at first when I heard her screaming outside. I was shocked to see her dead as she was very healthy.’

My family dug a grave for her in the back of our grocery store. Later on, I checked CCTV to see which car killed that dog. The footage mystified me. It’s so unexplainable.’

Samart buried his dog in his back garden without taking her to the vets. He reported the incident to the local authorities who said there was nothing they could do.

Dr Pattarapol Manee-on, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation veterinarian, said one possible explanation for the dog's sudden reaction it might have been bitten by a venomous snake such as a cobra.

He said: ‘It’s possible that the snake bit the dog’s nose, injecting neurotoxic venom into the body. The nose is extremely sensitive which would explain why the dog’s reaction was so sudden.

‘Snakes with venom that contains neurotoxins include cobras, king cobras, Malayan kraits and banded kraits. This will act quickly on nerve cells and damage the body.'
