Great Crested Grebes (Podiceps cristatus australis) are widespread but generally uncommon in Australia, but Herdsman Lake near Perth is a stronghold for the species. Several pairs of Grebes bred in the lake during this southern hemisphere Spring. This pair hatched three beautiful striped chicks, two of which were on the back of the parent on the nest. When the other parent arrived one chick scrambled to the edge of the nest in its eagerness to be fed and risked falling into the water. The other chick remained on its parent’s back and was rewarded by being fed a breast feather!
