Footage shows gyms closed in Bangkok today (June 22) as cases of Covid-19 linked to the Indian variant rise across Thailand.

The health centres are among a swathe of businesses still placed under restrictions following a third wave of cases which started in April and spread rapidly across the country.

Thailand recorded 4,059 infections today with 35 deaths today. Officials said the Delta variant first found in India is rising while the Beta strain of Covid-19 first identified in South Africa is also spreading through southern Thailand.

Medics in the country are now also studying the need for a third Covid-19 vaccine shot for people who are fully vaccinated as they believe certain coronavirus variants could be more infectious than others.

Close to four million residents have been vaccinated with a goal to reach herd immunity by the end of the year and re-open to tourists.
