At least 22 people were killed in the Mumbai area after landslides swamped houses.

Video showed large areas of the Indian city inundated with floodwaters after days of rain.

After more water fell on Saturday night and Sunday morning, 17 persons were killed and two others were injured after a building's retaining wall collapsed in New Bharat Nagar in Mahul. Three others were also killed after few huts collapsed in Surya Nagar in Panchsheel Chawl in Vikhroli east. Another person was killed in a wall collapse incident at Bhandup.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai. Other areas of India are also dealing with unusually heavy monsoon flooding.

It comes as countries around the world, from India to Europe to the US, battle extreme flooding, while others, including Russia's Siberia region, fight forest fires.

Scientists say such extreme weather events are made much more likely by climate change.
