Continuous heavy rain caused flash floods in northern Thailand at the weekend.

The extreme weather brought muddy deluge and submerged houses as well as rice fields in more than 46 villages in Phitsanulok province.

Residents were trapped in their homes as the floodwater took over the villages prompting rescue officers to patrol the area on boats on July 31.

The flood also damaged more than 1.7 square miles of agricultural land in the province as the extensive Kwai Noi Rriver overflowed.

Mayuri Tongson who lived in the river banks said: ‘I’m starting to see improvements after so many days because at first the water was almost two metres high. We were frightened as we were trapped.’

No one was reported hurt in the incident but the extreme weather was expected to be felt in neighbouring countries Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam.

Local officials had rescue teams survey the damage and provide food and relief assistance to the affected residents especially those who were in low-lying areas and living near the river.

Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines are at the start of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until October or November.

Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods.
