A family and their pet dog climbed onto the roof of their house to avoid being washed away by flash floods after heavy rain in southern Thailand.

Several villagers were submerged in the neck-deep water after severe downpours caused nearby rivers and streams to burst their banks and overflow in Prachinburi province on Thursday, September 16.

Local authorities sent rescue teams to evacuate residents and take them to higher ground until the muddy floodwater has subsided.

Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines are in the middle of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until October or November. Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods which cause rivers to flow faster and become dangerous.
