A bridge was flooded after continuous rainfall caused a river to overflow in southern Thailand.

Commuters were forced to take a 10 mile alternate route as the structure that connected two villages between Nakhon Si Thammarat and Krabi province was blocked with a knee-deep flood.

Footage shows the muddy deluge filling the 40-year-old bridge on September 13 as motorists were stranded on either side.

A villager said: ‘I drive on this bridge to deliver farm products but during monsoon, I can’t use the bridge. The canal overflows and blocks the bridge, sometimes it reaches up to a metre high.

‘Even for normal rainfalls, the bridge had always been blocked with water. Therefore I would like General Prayut Chan-o-cha, the Prime Minister, to help find a solution to the bridge problem for the villagers.’

Thailand and other countries in Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines are in the middle of their tropical monsoon rainy season, which lasts until October or November. Soaring temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius are often followed by powerful tropical storms with thunder, lightning, rain and flash floods which cause rivers to flow faster and become dangerous.
