A Burmese junta airstrike reportedly killed 24 civilians as artillery struck a mountain village in Karen State.

The Myanmar Air Force allegedly dropped two 500-pound bombs on the mining village of Law Kaw Hlo.

Footage shows smoke billowing from the residential area nestled in the mountains on August 17. Distraught residents were heard crying and screaming upon seeing the devastation.

The Karenni Army reported that the first bomb struck an old, uninhabited hospital building at 7:45 am local time, injuring two residents.

A second airstrike then hit the mountain community at noon, reportedly killing 24 and injuring more than 30 villagers.

The village is located in the Maw Chi area, a significant economic zone for the Myanmar military, producing minerals such as antimony, tin, tungsten, and copper.

The mineral production industry was closed in late July after the area was attacked by fighter jets more than 10 times, causing a large number of casualties.

Myanmar has fallen into civil war following the removal of democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, with a military coup in 2021.

Soldiers responded with barbaric force on protesting civilians, leading to widespread condemnation and financial sanctions. Rebel groups and civilian militias around the country have since been locked in a series of ongoing clashes with the ruling military.

Aung San Suu Kyi has since been jailed for 33 years on politically motivated charges and is likely to die behind bars unless the army is toppled - a tragic end the politician hailed by Barack Obama as an 'inspirational icon of democracy'.
