Drone captures huge 10ft wave smashing fisherman’s boat leaving him struggling for his life in the surf
This is the dramatic moment powerful waves destroyed a fisherman’s boat leaving him struggling for his life in the surf as the tail-end of typhoon Kompasu hit the Philippines.
Tour guide Milo Daragay Mendegorin and his friend were checking their drone camera when they spotted the man on his wooden vessel crossing the swollen tides off the coast of Bolinao in Pangasinan province on October 14.
A large wave more than 10ft high crashed into the boat, causing it to capsize and break into pieces. The fisherman emerged from the water as several more waves surged towards him.
Footage shows how he duck-dived below the powerful whitewater, emerging each time only to be battered by another wave.
Fortunately, he was able to swim to safety where locals gave him assistance.
Milo, who captured the spectacular aerial footage, said: ‘The fisherman’s boat was wrecked and unfortunately he was also hit by the waves. Luckily, he was able to make it to the beach and was helped.’
Kompasu, locally known as Maring, left the Philippine area of responsibility on October 13 morning.
It was the second cyclone to hit the Philippines this October, leaving at least 11 dead and 22 others missing due to landslides and flash floods while forcing the evacuations of thousands in Luzon island.
The typhoon moved into China and Vietnam before weakening over Thailand earlier this month.
