A bungalow was wrecked when super typhoon Rai slammed into Siargao Island in the Philippines.

Footage taken on December 19 shows strong gales sweeping away cushions and almost peeling away the ceiling of the bungalow’s balcony. The powerful winds whittled down the house to its frame, exposing wooden beams and tearing off its roof.

Tourist Glenn Comendador said he and his friends took shelter inside the bathroom to escape the worst of the storm. He said: ‘Debris and glass shards were flying towards us. And since the bathroom’s roof was made of wood, it started to fly off too.

‘The following day, we saw the destruction caused by the typhoon. Everything was damaged: trees, posts, windows, buildings. There was no signal and almost all the roads were blocked.’

Glenn added that they trekked to the coast of General Luna municipality and were able to board a boat heading to mainland Mindanao island. There they managed to book a flight to the Philippine capital Manila.

He said: ‘In a few days, supplies like gas and drinking water might run out for those left in Siargao. We hope more people send help and become aware of the situation in Visayas and Mindanao.’

Typhoon Rai, known locally as Odette, smashed into the Philippines on December 16, with winds of up to 195 kilometres per hour, making its first landfall on Siargao island. The powerful typhoon left widespread devastation across the country’s Visayas and Mindanao Islands.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said more than 1.8 million people have been affected by Typhoon Rai, leaving at least 156 people dead and 275 more injured.

Meanwhile the Philippine National Police said the death tally has reached 375 as of Tuesday December 21. The NDRRMC said it is now verifying the data.

Local government units in affected areas have reported power outages and telecommunication problems, with coastal areas suffering the brunt of the damage.

National weather agency Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said Typhoon Rai left the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday December 18. It is now moving along China’s southeastern coast.
