A kind local came to the aid of a calf that had been attacked by a pack of stray dogs in India.

The distressed young bovine was reportedly pounced on by around five to six stray canines in Bodhgaya, Bihar, on October 5.

Dramatic footage shows rescuers administering first aid to the injured animal with help from worried residents.

They also contacted a vet to treat the calf and alerted a non-profit organisation, which later administered a rabies vaccine to the animal.

Wildlife handlers said the incident shows the growing issue of stray dog attacks in many parts of the country, where an estimated 60 million dogs roam both urban and rural areas.
