Grain Power Station situated on the Isle of Grain in north Kent, UK remains offline today (February 22) after extreme winds from Storm Eunice caused the middle of its three chimneys to collapse.

Owner - German energy giant Uniper - was forced to immediately shut down the plant, with no date stated for when it's expected to be back online.

A full inspection will be need to be carried out before it's safe for repairs to be undertaken, and for normal operation to resume. Under normal operation, the plant has to capacity to power 1 million homes.

A statement on the Uniper website reads:

"The Grain site was evacuated as a precaution and we’ll need to carry out a full inspection before we return. It’s too early to say any more at this stage.

A weather related incident has occurred at Grain power station, during storm Eunice. We can confirm that there are no casualties and there is no risk to the local community. However, it has caused some damage on site and the power station has been temporarily taken offline as a precaution."
