A pregnant cow that fell into a drainage channel was rescued by fire fighters and members of the public in Ariyalur District of Tamil Nadu in southern India on Saturday 12 March.

The unfortunate bovine fell into the hole while on its way to grassland nearby.

After a passer-by spotted the stranded animal, the fire service was alerted and they, helped by the public, were eventually able to lift her out of the drain.

After that the animal was checked by the vet, who confirmed that mother and baby-to-be seem to be doing well.

Later it walked away happily with its owner.

The public praised the efforts of the rescue team for jumping into sewage to save the animal's life.
