Cold wet walruses try to push in to basking pod for warmth – only to get repelled

Buy video

Walruses (Odobenus rosmarus) are the largest seal-like mammals in the European Arctic. They are very tactile and lie in close contact with each other when basking. Two huge Walrus males emerged cold from the sea to join a pod of other males basking on the warm beach at Kapp Lee on Edgeøya in the Svalbard Archipelago. The skin on the necks of the wet, cold males is pink and puckered. The basking males in the pod resisted their attempts to wriggle in amongst them, with one pushing the wet male off with its rear flippers. The smaller cold, wet male became frustrated, bellowing and prodding other snoozing males with its tusks in an attempt to get into contact with the warm basking bodies.
