A plane caught fire after skidding off the runway while trying to take off in China this morning.

The Tibet Airlines plane was departing for Nyingchi prefecture in Tibet on May 12 when the incident happened at the Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport. It then erupted in flames.

Footage shows passengers running away from the burning aircraft as the blaze ripped through its fuselage while plumes of thick smoke rose from the wreckage of the Airbus A319.

Firefighters were later seen hosing down the plane. State media China Central Television said the fire was fully extinguished while the runway remained closed.

The Tibet Airlines Chongqing office said all 113 passengers and nine crew members on board flight number TV9833 were evacuated. Those with minor injuries had been sent to the hospital.

It said: 'There is this matter that is still under investigation. More information will be provided by the company.'

Flight records show the aircraft, with the registration number B-320G, came into service in October 2020.
