A plane skidded off the runway while it was landing in the remote mountains of Papua in Indonesia this morning.

The Cesna Grand Caravan was carrying cargo and food supplies to the Tiom Airport in Lanny Jaya when the pilot encountered problems after touching down.

Officials said the pilot and co-pilot emerged from the aircraft, registered as PK-SNA, unharmed. There were no passengers onboard the flight, operated by Smart Air Aviation.

Senior Commissioner Cahyo Sukarnito, Head of Public Relations for the Papua Regional Police, said: 'The plane, piloted by Captain Irwan and co-pilot Palma, encountered problems during landing and skidded off the runway.

'The plane was still not on the runway because of a difference in ground level (trap) at the end of the runway. This hampered the plane's movement while being towed.'
