Hundreds of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar staged a demonstration in front of the UNHCR office in Makassar City, Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, Thursday 19 May 2022. They asked for equal human rights for their fate.

The refugees came with their families asking that the UNHCR and the United Nations immediately send them to a third country. This is because many of these Rohingya refugees have settled in Indonesia but have not yet been sent to a third country. In contrast to refugees from Afghanistan, many have already been dispatched.

One of the refugees, Riyas Alam, said he asked IOM and UNHCR to provide human rights justice to himself and his friends from Rohingya, Myanmar. He has been in Indonesia for 12 years and has not yet departed for a third country.

"We cannot work and carry out job-seeking activities in Indonesia. We also want to be given the same human rights as other human beings. We hope that UNHCR will pay attention to the fate of us who have been refugees for a dozen years. We want to be dispatched immediately to a third country," he said.
