This resourceful Chinese carpenter built a multi-functional 'bed car' from scratch.

Inventor Gu Yupeng, 39, created the motorised bed in his workshop in Kunming City in Yunnan province, China.

He designed the blueprint himself using computer software, and pieced together the bed's frame with recycled wheels, wires, and batteries from his previous inventions.

Footage shows Gu taking the joystick-controlled bed car outdoors for a fishing trip. He drives through moderately rough terrain to a nearby pond, all while bundled up comfortably in soft blankets and pillows.

Aside from driving, the contraption also has an adjustable head rest, and even a built-in tent cover to protect Gu from the rain.

Speaking to China Global Television Network, he said: 'When I was a child, I was always reluctant to get up early for school. Then I thought, if only I could go to school without leaving my bed. I just tried to make this wish come true when I was able to.

'It's mainly for entertainment. But as many suggest, it can also be used for different occasions, like maritime rescues or flood-fighting missions.

'I just want to make some vehicles or machines with utilitarian functions to satisfy people's needs. It would be great if some manufacturers could mass produce them. If not, I'd like to share my designs on the internet. It might benefit people in some way.'
