Man makes offerings to assuage spirits during “hungry ghosts month” in Hong Kong
Near a public estate in Kowloon, on Saturday 13 August 2022, a man makes offerings of papers money and other goodies, hoping to assuage spirits during what is called the “hungry ghosts month”. It is also called Zhongyuan Festival, falling on the 15th day of the lunar calendar. Chinese believe that the gates of hell open up and ghosts are free to feed and enjoy themselves for one month. Popular superstition is that misfortunes are likely to be rising during this month, hence the offerings to the spirits.
