Over 153 participants injured in Janmashtami human pyramid event in Mumbai, India
As many as 153 'Govindas' or Dahi Handi participants were reported injured while forming human pyramids during Krishna Janmashtami celebrations in Mumbai on Friday 19 August.
Another 64 suffered injuries in Thane city while forming the human towers.
In Mumbai, while most of the injured persons were discharged after treatment, 23 others were admitted to hospital. Their condition is reportedly stable.
Krishna Janmashtami, a Hindu festival that marks the birth of Lord Krishna, was celebrated with great enthusiasm across India on Friday.
Dahi-Handi is a ritual in which devotees of Lord Krishna recreate the famous act of 'Maakhan Chori' or butter stealing, which is one of the many mischievous acts from the Lord's childhood stories.
One part of the festival involves people climbing on each other and forming human pyramids, to try and reach and break open clay pots filled with curd, which have been strung up high in the air.
It was the first time in two years the Dahi Handi festival had been being observed without any Covid-19 restrictions.
On Thursday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that 'Dahi-Handi' will now be recognised as an official sport in the state.
