This is the terrifying moment dozens of furious hornets attacked two men who destroyed their nest in Indonesia.

A cloud of the droning bugs descended on the pair - who quickly retreated into their car - after they knocked down a chunk of the massive hive hanging from a tree in Medan City, North Sumatra Province on August 25.

Footage shows how the hornets repeatedly slammed into the vehicle's windows and doors in a desperate attempt to exact vengeance.

Onlooker Herindo said: "There were a lot of hornets. They were striped yellow in colour."

The insects' anger eventually abated, and they later left to repair their nest.

Hornets are a type of wasp under the genus Vespa. They live in swarms across tropical Asia, Europe, Africa, and North America.

When their home is threatened, they will defend it aggressively, using their painful stingers laced with venom that can prove deadly to some humans who are allergic.

Although they are considered dangerous pests, they usually do not attack unless provoked or disturbed.
